BALMAIN
SEP|2018 - The Virtual Balmain Army
Created in collaboration with Balmain Creative Director Olivier Rousteing, this landmark campaign introduced the world to the first fully digital Balmain Army, featuring virtual models Shudu, Margot, and Zhi.
Released in 2018, the project marked one of the fashion industry's earliest and most widely discussed uses of virtual models within a luxury fashion campaign. At a time when digital humans were still largely unfamiliar to mainstream audiences, Balmain embraced emerging technology to explore new possibilities for fashion imagery, storytelling, and representation.

The campaign featured Shudu alongside two new virtual characters created exclusively for Balmain: Margot and Zhi. Together, the trio embodied different expressions of beauty, identity, and individuality while reflecting the confidence, strength, and global perspective that had become synonymous with the Balmain Army.
Developed by The Diigitals founder Cameron-James Wilson in close collaboration with Rousteing, the campaign combined digital character creation with cutting-edge 3D fashion workflows. The garments themselves were recreated digitally, allowing the collection to exist entirely within a virtual environment while maintaining the visual language and craftsmanship associated with luxury fashion.

For Olivier Rousteing, the project formed part of a broader conversation around inclusivity and the evolving nature of fashion imagery. Inspired by cultural icons such as David Bowie, Prince, Tina Turner, and Michael Jackson, the campaign celebrated individuality and challenged traditional expectations surrounding model casting, identity, and creative expression.
The release generated global press coverage and widespread discussion across fashion, technology, and popular culture. Publications around the world debated the implications of virtual models, questioning how digital humans might influence the future of fashion campaigns, advertising, and visual culture.

Beyond the conversation it sparked, the campaign represented a significant technical achievement. By combining CGI character creation, digital garment simulation, and luxury fashion art direction, The Diigitals and Balmain demonstrated that entirely virtual fashion campaigns could achieve the same level of visual impact as traditional photography while opening new creative possibilities.
Today, the Virtual Balmain Army is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the emergence of digital fashion. What began as an experimental campaign helped introduce virtual models to a global audience and established The Diigitals as one of the leading pioneers in the rapidly evolving world of digital humans.
More than a campaign, the project became a cultural milestone, one that challenged perceptions of fashion imagery and helped define a new era where luxury fashion, technology, and virtual identity could exist together.
